RAP vs. Fair Market Value: Understanding Your Roblox Assets

RAP vs. Fair Market Value: Understanding Your Roblox Assets
TL;DR: RAP tells you what an item sold for recently. Fair Market Value tells you what it's worth right now. When trading, always trust Fair Market Value — check it on the Trade Calculator before you accept anything.
When you look at a Roblox item's page, you'll see two numbers that seem to represent "value": RAP and Fair Market Value. If you've ever wondered why they are different — or which one you should trust before accepting a trade — this guide is for you.
1. What is RAP? (Historical Data)
RAP stands for Recent Average Price.
- How it works: It is a calculated average based on the last few successful sales of an item on the official Roblox marketplace. It is purely mathematical and backward-looking.
- The Trap: RAP is slow to catch up. If an item suddenly becomes highly sought after due to a game update, the RAP will still show the "old" price for hours or even days. Conversely, if an item is crashing in value, RAP will keep you trapped in a high price point that no longer exists.
- Best Used For: Getting a general sense of an item's recent historical performance.
2. What is Fair Market Value? (Predictive Data)
Fair Market Value is our proprietary estimate of what an item is worth right now.
- How it works: Our valuation engine analyzes dozens of data points beyond just recent sales: current listing prices (asks), active buy offers (bids), community sentiment, demand trends, and liquidity. It is forward-looking and designed to react to the "now."
- The Advantage: It accounts for market movement before the sales are finalized. If we see a massive spike in buy offers for a specific sword, the Fair Market Value will tick upward immediately, even if no sales have completed yet.
- Best Used For: Making trading decisions. This is the number you should rely on when using our Trade Calculator.
The "Real-World" Example
Imagine an item that usually sells for 1,000 Robux.
- A popular YouTuber makes a video about it, and suddenly everyone wants it.
- RAP will still say 1,000 Robux because the last few sales were yesterday at that price.
- Fair Market Value will jump to 1,200 Robux because we see that everyone has stopped selling and are placing high-value buy offers.
If you trade based on RAP, you'd be losing 200 Robux in value. By trading based on Fair Market Value, you're playing the current market.
Pro-Tips for Serious Traders
- Never trust RAP alone. If you see a massive gap between RAP and Fair Market Value, be cautious — the market is likely shifting, or the item has low liquidity.
- Use the Trade Calculator. We've done the heavy lifting for you. When you enter items into our Trade Calculator, we automatically compare the Fair Market Values to tell you instantly if you are winning or losing the trade.
- Check the "Trend" icon. Alongside the value, look at the trend direction (Rising/Stable/Falling). This gives you the context of why the value is where it is.
Ready to test your knowledge? Head over to the Item Database, pick an item you own, and compare its RAP vs. Fair Market Value. Then, drop both sides of a potential trade into the Trade Calculator to see if you're getting a fair deal.
