99 Nights in the Forest: Beginner's Survival Guide

99 Nights in the Forest is a survival horror game where you camp in a mysterious forest, manage your resources, and survive increasingly dangerous nights. Whether you're a new player or looking to optimize your strategy, this guide covers everything you need to survive your first 99 nights.

The Basics: What Is 99 Nights in the Forest?

You spawn in a forest with limited supplies. Your goal is to survive as many nights as possible by:

  • Gathering resources (wood, food, water)
  • Building and upgrading your camp
  • Crafting tools and weapons
  • Managing your campfire (your primary light and warmth source)
  • Defending against forest creatures that emerge at night

Each night gets progressively harder — more enemies, tougher conditions, and rarer resources.

Your First Night: Priority Checklist

When you spawn, you have limited daylight. Here's your priority order:

  1. Gather wood — chop trees near your spawn. You need at least 30-50 wood for your first camp
  2. Find water — locate the nearest water source (river or lake)
  3. Collect food — berries, mushrooms, or hunt small animals
  4. Build your campfire — place it in a defensible spot, away from dense tree cover
  5. Craft a basic weapon — a wooden spear or club is enough for night 1
  6. Build a shelter — even a basic lean-to protects you from weather effects

Campfire Management

Your campfire is the heart of your survival. It provides:

  • Light — keeps creatures away and lets you see at night
  • Warmth — prevents freezing during cold nights
  • Cooking — raw food must be cooked to avoid food poisoning

Campfire Tips

  • Keep fuel stocked — wood is the primary fuel. Always have 20+ pieces ready before nightfall
  • Don't let it go out — a dark camp attracts more creatures
  • Use Flames — Flames (from codes or supply crates) can boost your campfire's effects temporarily
  • Position smartly — place your campfire near your shelter entrance for maximum protection

Resource Gathering Guide

Wood

The most essential resource. Found by chopping trees with an axe.

  • Basic Axe: 2-3 wood per tree
  • Stone Axe: 4-5 wood per tree
  • Iron Axe: 6-8 wood per tree

Food

Food TypeHunger RestoredNotes
Berries10Common, spoils fast
Mushrooms15Some are poisonous — learn to identify
Cooked Meat40Best sustain, requires hunting
Fish25Use a Fishing Rod at water sources

Water

Found at rivers, lakes, and rain collectors. Always boil water at your campfire before drinking — raw water can cause sickness.

Fishing: The Hidden Gem

Fishing is one of the most underrated survival mechanics in 99 Nights in the Forest. A Fishing Rod lets you:

  • Catch fish for a reliable food source
  • Earn Diamonds (rare drops)
  • Activate the secret
    "yay fishing"
    code for 2 free Diamonds

Pro tip: Always keep a Fishing Rod in your inventory. If you're low on food and it's too dangerous to hunt, find a safe water spot and fish.

Night Survival Strategy

Each night, creatures emerge from the forest. Here's how to survive:

Early Nights (1-20)

  • Creatures are weak — a wooden weapon is sufficient
  • Stay near your campfire
  • Don't venture into the deep forest

Mid Nights (21-50)

  • Upgrade to stone or iron weapons
  • Build defensive walls around your camp
  • Watch for ranged creatures — keep moving

Late Nights (51-99)

  • Iron or better weapons required
  • Fortified camp with multiple defensive layers
  • Stockpile healing items
  • Consider teaming up with other players

Currency Shop & Codes

The Currency Shop is where you spend Diamonds and Flames. You can also redeem codes here:

  1. Open the Currency Shop
  2. Click the "Codes" button at the bottom right
  3. Enter a code and claim your reward

Check our 99 Nights in the Forest Codes guide for all working codes.

Pro Tips for New Players

  • Never go out at night without a weapon — even basic creatures can overwhelm you
  • Keep your campfire burning — darkness is your biggest enemy
  • Stockpile before exploring — always have food, water, and wood before venturing deep
  • Upgrade your axe early — faster wood gathering saves hours
  • Fish during downtime — it's safe, reliable, and can earn Diamonds
  • Use Flames wisely — save them for event rerolls when you get a bad event

Survive long enough and you'll unlock rare items, achievements, and the ability to trade with other survivors. Good luck out there — the forest doesn't forgive mistakes.
