99 Nights in the Forest: Pelt Trader Guide

The Pelt Trader is one of the most important NPCs in 99 Nights in the Forest. Located in the map, this NPC lets you trade animal pelts — dropped by creatures you kill — for valuable gear including axes, armor, ammunition, sacks, and guns.

Knowing which pelts to trade and what to prioritize can mean the difference between surviving Night 30 and Night 80+.

What Is the Pelt Trader?

The Pelt Trader is an NPC that accepts animal pelts in exchange for items. Pelts are dropped by animals you hunt or kill throughout your run. Rather than discarding them, you can exchange them for equipment that significantly improves your survival odds.

Available trade items include:

  • Axes (melee weapons)
  • Armor (protection)
  • Ammunition (for ranged weapons)
  • Sacks (inventory expansion)
  • Guns (ranged weapons)

Pelt Trading Priority Guide

Not all trades are equal. Here's how to think about each category:

🥇 Priority 1: Sacks

Sacks expand your carry capacity, letting you haul more loot and resources per night. More inventory = more flexibility = longer survival. Always prioritize sack upgrades early in a run.

🥈 Priority 2: Armor

Armor directly reduces incoming damage, which extends your effective survival time against Night 40+ enemies. A good armor set can carry you several extra nights on its own.

🥉 Priority 3: Guns & Ammunition

Ranged weapons are invaluable against enemies that are dangerous to fight in melee (especially Night 60+ enemy types). Stock ammunition whenever you have spare pelts after covering Sacks and Armor.

Priority 4: Axes

Axes are useful melee upgrades but generally lower priority than the categories above. Exception: if you're running a melee-focused build or have a class that synergizes with melee damage.

How to Farm Pelts Efficiently

Animal Locations

  • Animals spawn more frequently in forested areas away from your base
  • Dawn and dusk transitions increase animal activity
  • Some animals only appear at specific night thresholds

Best Early-Game Pelt Sources

  • Deer — Common, good pelt yield, low threat
  • Foxes — Moderate threat, valuable pelts relative to difficulty
  • Boars — Higher threat but premium pelts for advanced trades

Pelt Stacking Strategy

Don't rush to trade every pelt immediately. Accumulate a stockpile of 5–10 pelts before visiting the Pelt Trader — this lets you evaluate all available trades at once and prioritize the most impactful items for your current situation.

Class Synergies with the Pelt Trader

ClassSynergy
ScavengerExtra sack space + faster chest opening frees up pelt inventory for more efficient trading
Base DefenderArmor trades directly strengthen your defensive setup
AssassinAmmunition trades fuel your high-damage ranged/melee burst windows

Advanced Tips

Don't Over-Trade Early

It's tempting to trade every pelt for gear immediately. Resist. Pelts become more valuable as your run progresses and higher-tier trade items unlock. Spending 8 pelts on a basic axe at Night 10 wastes resources you could use for a gun at Night 40.

The Sack + Armor Loop

The optimal Pelt Trader loop for most runs:

  1. First visit → prioritize Sacks
  2. Second visit → prioritize Armor
  3. Third+ visits → Ammunition and Guns for the late-game push

Save Pelts Before Night 50

The Night 50 threshold is where the game's difficulty spikes hard. Make sure you've completed at least one Armor trade and have ammunition stockpiled before you hit this wall.

Multiplayer Coordination

In co-op runs, coordinate pelt trading with your team. One player specializing in Sacks + Armor while another focuses on Guns/Ammo creates a strong division of roles that helps the whole team survive deeper into the night count.

Summary

  1. Farm pelts actively — don't ignore animals during your runs
  2. Stockpile before trading — see all options before spending
  3. Sacks first, Armor second, Guns third
  4. Hold premium pelts until Night 30+ for better trade tiers
  5. Coordinate in multiplayer for maximum efficiency

The Pelt Trader is one of the game's best tools for extending your survival. Use it wisely and you'll consistently push deeper into the night count — and earn better loot along the way. 🐾
